This initiative was established by Russell originally using a similar concept to provide informative feedback for learning and development in higher education. Russell also uses the concept of training videos for teachers, teacher training videos. Savraj produces all the Flash training videos and is a key contributor to the site.
Russell Stannard is a principal lecturer in Multimedia/ICT at the University of Westminster as well as the course leader in the MSc in Interactive Multimedia.
Russell also teaches on courses in ICT and English for Academic Purposes as well as running the Media and Technology module.
The videos are also linked within certain course which both lecturers teach on. The development of this project has proven to aid students in learning multimedia enhancing their capabilities within software applications rapidly. The videos themselves also fit in with visual based learning which are quick and easy to follow. Independent study, research and feedback from the students highlight learning through this method is more effective than following traditional tutorial based learning through series of handouts.
The effect of this project has also enabled both lecturers to free up time within labs, where the focus is on practical exercises. Giving them both an opportunity to include more theoretical component and reconnaissance within interactive design, again this has proven to be effective for student development and as a result is reflected through a higher calibre of marks.
The videos themselves are intuitive and are very simple to use even for individuals with no background within Multimedia. Simply click on a topic in the left hand menu and a series of training videos will begin to play. You can stop, start and rewind the videos using the controls at the bottom of the page. You can also jump to a particular video by clicking on the any of the topics in the video menu list.
The project is yet within its infancy and future efforts will be towards enhancing and including more material and more videos on abundant of other applications. The site is also in need of a make over as soon as I can find the time.
